Are We Having Fun Yet? How to Turn Pleasure and Fun into a Healing Habit

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

dog-622695_1280I often see weekly themes when I work with my clients. I’ll notice several people talking about the same issues, feeling stuck in the same way or struggling with similar problems.

I’m not sure why this is. Perhaps it has to do with the moon and stars, the morphic field as discussed by Rupert Sheldrake, (you can google it…), or the way in which I am hearing and perceiving things.

In my sessions in general, I often ask people if and how they are having fun in their lives. I consider fun activities an important part of healing for many people as it raises your vibration or energy, balances your neurotransmitters, relieves stress, helps the mind shift out of negative states and is, well…fun!

When I ask about my clients’ fun activities, it is not uncommon to get somewhat blank looks and pretty sparse answers.

Sometimes people refer to current events and world crises and say, “How can I go out and have fun when the word is so messed up?” Other times they may refer to personal stressors and lack of time for such trivial pursuits as “fun”.

In any case, recently there was a week in which it was evident that very few people were having much fun. For me, it became the theme of the week.

This happened to be the week that Robin Williams tragically committed suicide and it was on the minds of several of my clients. While my clients generally don’t mention current events in their sessions, this event was mentioned several times.

People were feeling sad, some said they could relate, they had had similar low points in their life, others said they couldn’t understand it; mostly they all felt the untimely loss of someone who had made them laugh and brought them joy. There were other heavy world events that week and the collective energy was low.

I get it. Sometimes it feels like the world and all of its inhabitants are on the verge of a nervous breakdown and having fun is the last thing on anyone’s mind.

However, we can’t stay in this state of fear and complacency. It’s low vibration energy and contributes to the very problems we are trying to overcome. I’ve always believed that the way to heal the world is one person at a time and that it is each individual’s responsibility to do their best to become conscious and whole.

Staying contracted and overly stressed doesn’t help you or anyone else. I believe it was Dr. Christiane Northrup who I heard say, “Depression is not a Prozac deficiency. It’s a pleasure deficiency.”

If pleasure and fun can heal our minds and lift depression, it becomes our duty to have more of it!

Sometimes I assign fun activities to my clients, with their agreement, and hold them accountable to getting it done. It’s always interesting to me to see the results of this assignment.

Today, as I watched Oprah interview Mariel Hemingway and her partner Bobby Williams on Super Soul Sunday this topic of fun was discussed. Mariel and Bobby talked about how important it is in their life together to have fun.

They love nature, play on the beach together, go rock climbing, watch the sunrise, hike, laugh and joke frequently and appear to thoroughly enjoy life. As a result, Mariel has overcome her family legacy of depression and suicide, and instead, has made a positive contribution to the world through her books, charitable work, and energetic, loving spirit.

Beyond that, they both look vibrant, healthy and 10 years younger than their respective ages.

In this interview, Oprah mentioned that she doesn’t focus on fun much in her own life and may not be having enough of it. So if you are feeling that way, too, you are in good company!

However, it may be time for you to increase your fun factor and make it more of a daily focus.

What can you do to make that happen? How do you currently have fun and what would you like to do to increase the fun in your life?

For me, in the nice weather, one of the things I do is cultivate a daily practice of walking on the beach near my house for about an hour. I load up my iPod with inspirational podcasts and feel like it is a walking meditation that soothes my soul and calms my mind. I feel hypnotized by the sound of the waves, enjoy being out in nature moving my body, connect with my inner guidance, and return home in a state of peace and quiet.

What can you do this week to have more fun, raise your energy, soothe your soul and balance your biochemistry?

If your mind wants to tell you that you have no time for such trivial pursuits, think of it as your assignment to heal yourself, become more whole and make the world a better place.
