Turn Towards the Light

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

When I feel like writing something and don’t have a topic, I search for photos that inspire me. This one seemed to have such an obvious message…

Nature is such a great teacher. In these times of extreme change and darkness, we can always do as nature does and turn towards the light.

Darkness is so easy to find these days. All you have to do is look at any headline and you are hit with talk of fear, toxic behavior and impending doom and gloom.

It’s easy to become numb to it and start to lose hope for our future, our planet and life itself. It can start to feel like a constant slog through obstacle after obstacle.

However, I have found that it all depends on where we put our focus. I am reminded of the story of the race car driver who said he never looks at the wall when racing around the track at high speeds. His advice was to only look at where you want to go, not where you don’t want to go—otherwise you increase your likelihood of hitting the wall! Makes sense.

When I work with clients who want to make a big transition, it is natural that their “ego mind” is full of stories about all the things that can go wrong. The ego loves a good drama. It can be comical sometimes. On occasion, I will point out to clients, “Wow, there’s a lot of drama going on there” and we have a good laugh. Seeing the absurdity of the fear-based story can break the trance or spell that this kind of thinking creates.

I’ve been there myself. My common story was that If I made some big change everything would go wrong and I would inevitably end up living as a bag-lady on the street somewhere. Ever run that story? I actually think I have conquered that particular fear, but I remember it well!

How to Maintain an Open Heart During Troubling Times

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

Pretty much everyone I speak to is having to confront their deepest fears these days. We are being hit from all sides. The underlying theme in most of these situations is that of loss and grief. There is loss in relationships, jobs, health, finances, familiar social structures and perhaps, worst of all, basic trust and faith in that which we thought was true.

We are being stripped down to face ourselves and our lives in ways that can make us question everything and everyone. We are seeing erratic, irrational, cruel, manipulative and dishonest behavior on the part of authority figures and those who we thought were meant to protect us and keep us safe. Relationships of all kinds–personal and professional– are falling apart and leaving an unexpected void to be filled.

What are we to make of this and how do we move through it without completely, and perhaps permanently, closing our hearts due to the immense sadness and grief?

This is a time of reckoning. A time for deep self-reflection and decision making. We need to ask ourself how we want to proceed.

It can be so easy to shut down to one’s feelings and simply avoid, deny and go numb. There are countless ways to numb out found in our endless electronic devices, mind altering substances–including food and sugar, or any other addiction of choice. If you are going there in your life, it is understandable, but it is not a sustainable choice.

Your Future Lies in Your Heart…

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

I was doing a guided meditation by my meditation teacher, Joe Dispenza, the other day when I heard him say, “Your future lies in your heart.” A primary aspect of his mediation teachings is to have you focus on your heart while letting go of your habitual clinging to familiar thoughts and feelings.

I often find this instruction challenging as it shows me how much I am unconsciously attached to my conditioned thoughts, which then create my daily reality, even after 30 years of regular mediation!

I can relate to how hard it is to create deep change. It takes a daily practice of disconnecting from the “matrix” of our common reality and consciously choosing to see things in a different way.

The reason this is so important is that we are all caught up in a mass hypnosis of sorts. We are socialized and conditioned to think if we do the “right” things, and make the “most logical and safe” choices then everything will ultimately turn out OK. After all, that’s what we’ve been taught for years by our parents and society. They should know, right?

What it Feels Like to Grow

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

One of the most common phrases I hear people say when we discuss steps to change their life is, “That’s hard…!”

I often respond by saying, “What you are doing now is hard!”

Yeah, sorry…growth is often hard. That’s the truth. I won’t sugar coat it or lie…

I won’t waste your time or money promising quick fixes and easy solutions to most of life’s challenges and problems.

I’ve been around long enough to know there are no quick fixes and no real shortcuts to sustained growth and transformation.

I don’t do bandaid therapy or superficial life coaching. I haven’t found it to work. What works is the true grit of deep self-determination, self-confrontation and the courage to do what it takes to move through blocks and fears.

I have seen people work miracles in their lives when they stick with it. It is often my most down and out client who surprises me the most with the transformation they make. People amaze me. You never know what guts they have.

How to Deal with Fear of Change

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

Change is the one constant we can be sure of. It is going on all around us at breakneck speed and shows no evidence of slowing down. In most cases, the changes in our world are going to speed up, get messier and be less predictable. If we don’t learn to become comfortable with this and to create the necessary changes in our own lives to keep up with it, we will be left behind.

As a therapist and life coach I work with clients all day long who are trying to create changes in their lives. Often they want new career opportunities or their own business with more creativity, flexibility and freedom. They desire better relationships with a spouse, family member or colleague. They may want to change living situations, geographic location, start a new relationship, or improve their health, fitness and finances. The list is endless.

Change drives us and fascinates us. Yet, it also frustrates us and scares us like nothing else. As much as we may want a change, the desire to stay safe is equally strong. These two opposing forces– to grow, yet stay safe–wreck havoc and inner conflict like nothing else. I once heard someone say, “If you want to grow, get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

So what is one to do?

Here are 5 steps to help you navigate change more skillfully and with less fear:
