How to Stay Inspired in an Increasingly Tense World

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

If you’re a highly sensitive person, a creative, an entrepreneur, or someone who feels deeply affected by what’s happening around you, you may have noticed how much harder it can be to feel inspired lately.

The constant stream of news, social tension, uncertainty, and conflict can leave us feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and emotionally depleted. We may worry about the future, carefully choose our words for fear of upsetting someone, or pull away from others because it feels safer not to engage.

Meanwhile, life keeps moving.

We stay busy. We scroll. We listen to another podcast, read another article, or search for more information, hoping that understanding what’s happening will help us feel more settled. Sometimes, without realizing it, we begin using our screens and constant stimulation to numb ourselves rather than truly engage with our lives.

Along the way, we may lose touch with the things we love, the people we miss, and the dreams that once excited us.

So how do we stay connected to life—and to the things that inspire us—when so much around us feels unsettling?

Are You Taking In More Than You Can Process?

We live in a time when information is almost impossible to escape. News updates, social media, podcasts, and online conversations compete for our attention throughout the day.

For those of us who are sensitive to our surroundings or deeply concerned about the world, this constant exposure can be particularly draining.

We may tell ourselves we’re staying informed, but at some point, gathering more information stops being helpful. We become increasingly aware of what’s wrong while feeling less able to do anything about it.

We can become so accustomed to looking at a screen that we forget what it feels like to simply be where we are—to notice the world around us, follow our curiosity, or let our minds wander.

Sometimes, what we need isn’t more information. It’s space to hear ourselves think, feel, and reconnect with what truly nourishes and inspires us.

Reconnect With What Brings You Alive

Since moving to Maui, I’ve become even more aware of how much our surroundings and daily experiences affect our sense of well-being.

During the COVID years, I could feel that city life was becoming more chaotic. Although I enjoyed my time in Denver and had a loving circle of friends, I couldn’t deny that my energy was being drawn elsewhere. I intuitively knew I wanted to be closer to nature in the coming years. I love the ocean and feel most at home in a tropical environment. It’s where I feel most inspired and alive.

I began following those inner promptings and taking steps toward creating a life here.

My process, both personally and in my work with clients, is to take a few inspired steps and see what unfolds. Do doors open or close? What opportunities emerge? I have learned to trust this process, pay attention to the signs, and remain open to synchronicities and unexpected help along the way.

I trust that when I follow this inner guidance, the next right step will reveal itself, often in ways I couldn’t have planned.

Today, my life includes daily swims, walks in nature, watching the migrating whales return to Maui, doing fun things with friends, exploring the island, listening to music, meditation and cultivating peace and calm.

I feel more alive in my life, which allows me to be more present in my work.

These experiences remind me that there’s more to life than what we’re listening to, reading about, worrying over, or trying to figure out.

Your sources of inspiration may look entirely different from mine. Perhaps you love making art, gardening, playing music, cooking, spending time with animals, training for a marathon, or traveling and exploring somewhere new.

The particular activity matters less than how it makes you feel: connected, curious, creative, joyful, or simply more present.

What helps you feel most like yourself? And are you making enough room for those things in your life?

Give Yourself Permission to Enjoy Your Life

Sometimes, when there’s so much suffering and uncertainty in the world, enjoying our own lives can feel strangely difficult.

We may feel guilty focusing on our own happiness when others are struggling. We may believe we should be doing more, worrying more, or paying closer attention to everything that’s going wrong.

But continually absorbing distress doesn’t solve the world’s problems. It can leave us with less energy to contribute to the things we care about.

We can acknowledge what’s painful without allowing it to consume our entire experience.

We can care about others and still enjoy a beautiful day. We can remain concerned about the future while making plans, pursuing our interests, and looking forward to something.

Joy isn’t a denial of reality. Neither is inspiration.

Sometimes, they’re exactly what help us stay engaged with life rather than retreating from it.

What Would Help You Feel More Alive Right Now?

You don’t have to make dramatic changes to begin reconnecting with yourself.

You might notice where your attention goes throughout the day and whether those habits leave you feeling more connected or more depleted.

You might take a walk without listening to anything, put on music instead of another information-heavy podcast, spend time outdoors, reach out to someone you miss, or return to an activity you’ve been neglecting.

You might simply decide you’ve gathered enough information for today.

Or you might ask yourself a different question when you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or uninspired:

What would help me feel more alive right now?

Not more productive. Not more informed. Not more prepared for every possible thing that could go wrong.

More alive.

I believe our own healing and aliveness affect the world around us. When we’re connected to ourselves, our hearts, our desires, and what inspires us, we have more to bring to our relationships, our work, and our communities.

We each have a unique way of expressing ourselves and contributing to the world. When we lose touch with that part of ourselves, we can begin living according to fear, obligation, or other people’s expectations rather than what feels meaningful and true to us.

I’ve always believed that one way we help change the world is by doing our own inner work—healing old wounds, listening to our inner guidance, and having the courage to live in alignment with who we really are.

We can’t always change what’s happening around us. But we can choose what we nurture within ourselves and what we bring to the people and places we touch.

And sometimes, it begins with something very simple: turning our attention back toward the life that’s here, waiting for us to participate in it.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or uncertain about your next chapter, having a compassionate space to explore what you’re experiencing can help you reconnect with yourself, listen to your inner guidance, and discover what’s possible.
