The Power of Willingness: The Small Shift That Changes Everything

by Nancy Harris Leave a Comment

Many people believe they need confidence before they can move forward.

Others think they need certainty.

Some believe they need to eliminate fear first.

But after years of working with clients—and navigating my own life transitions—I have found that meaningful change rarely begins with confidence, certainty, or fearlessness.

It begins with willingness.

Why We Wait

Most of us are waiting for a feeling that never arrives.

We wait until:

  • we feel ready
  • we feel confident
  • we know the outcome
  • the fear disappears

But life rarely works that way.

If we wait until we are completely comfortable, we often remain exactly where we are.

The truth is that most meaningful changes involve some degree of uncertainty. There is rarely a moment when every question is answered and every fear is gone.

Yet many people postpone the next step while waiting for that moment.

The Misunderstanding About Courage

Many people think courage means not being afraid.

In reality, courage often means being willing.

Willing to:

  • have the difficult conversation
  • make the change
  • set a boundary
  • take a risk
  • trust what is emerging

even while fear is still present.

Fear and willingness can exist at the same time.

One does not have to disappear before the other can emerge.

A Lesson from A Course in Miracles

One of the teachings that has stayed with me from my years of studying A Course in Miracles is its emphasis on willingness.

The Course doesn’t ask us to be perfect, fearless, or completely certain. Again and again, it points to the importance of being willing.

Willing to see things differently.

Willing to release an old belief.

Willing to let go of a familiar way of thinking.

Willing to take a small step toward healing.

I have found this principle to be true not only spiritually, but in everyday life. Often, transformation begins not when we know exactly what to do, but when we become willing to take the next step that is being asked of us.

Willingness Is Different from Certainty

Willingness says:

  • I don’t know exactly how this will unfold.
  • I don’t have all the answers.
  • I may feel uncomfortable.
  • And I am still willing to move forward.

That small shift changes everything.

Because it moves us out of waiting and into participation.

Instead of asking life to provide guarantees, we begin engaging with the opportunities, challenges, and possibilities that are already in front of us.

My Maui Experience

When I decided to move to Maui, I didn’t have certainty.

I couldn’t guarantee it would work out exactly as I hoped.

I couldn’t know how every detail would unfold.

What I did have was a willingness to trust the next step and discover what would emerge.

Looking back, I can see that willingness was far more important than certainty.

Had I waited until every doubt disappeared, I might still be waiting.

What Healing Often Requires

Whether the challenge involves:

  • a relationship
  • a career transition
  • a health issue
  • a life decision
  • a spiritual journey

the question is often not:

“What do I know?”

The deeper question becomes:

“What am I willing to do?”

Or sometimes:

“What am I willing to see differently?”

Those questions have a way of opening doors that certainty never can.

Closing Reflection

You do not need to have all the answers before moving forward.

You do not need to eliminate every fear.

You do not need to feel completely ready.

Sometimes the most powerful words we can say are:

“I am willing.”

Willing to learn.

Willing to grow.

Willing to trust.

Willing to take one small step.

Because willingness creates an opening.

And often, that opening is exactly where healing, growth, and transformation begin.

Where in your life are you being invited to be more willing?
